Last week Chris went on her first deep sea fishing trip off the coast of Catalina Island. She had always enjoyed fishing since she was a child. Her dad liked to fish very often. Her big brother Jack didn’t like it, so her dad took her out often. One of her favorite places was Lake Isabella. It was about two hours’ driving from their home. However, she never went fishing in the sea, so when her friend Robert invited her to join him on his company’s fishing trip, she agreed at once.
The trip to the sea off Catalina Island took about an hour. Chris was surprised at how quickly she lost sight of the land. It was a bit frightening when she thought about how alone they were in this great sea.

The Italian city of Venice and the American city of New Orleans are slowly sinking. So is Bangkok. Officials in the city and scientists say they don’t know how long people will be able to continue living in the Thai capital.
There are some reasons for the sinking. They are a rising sea level and too much pumping of groundwater. Another reason is building so many high buildings. Officials keep building these high buildings because they can make a lot of money.
Last month, the Bangkok Post newspaper published an article called Stop the City Sinking. It said that, even with the terrible floods and new warnings, it seemed that most Thais didn’t care about it. The newspaper called for stopping the expansion of the city. And it also called for a stop of groundwater pumping.
“If we don’t do anything, everybody will lose. If the land itself is sinking, the value of land will also go down. Everybody should pay attention to this problem,” Sucharit Koontanakulvong, head of the Water Resources System Research Unit at Chulalongbom University, said.
