Good morning, everyone! I feel greatly honored to speak here. What I’d like to introduce to yois Nian’gao, which is one of the most popular and typical dishes eaten during the Spring Festival. Nian’gao is a kind of rice pudding and it can be roasted, fried, or steamed. As the name suggests, Nian’gao symbolizes abundance, wealth and prosperity for both the family and the country.
In the Chinese New Year, eating Nian’gao, people may think of “Nian”. Then what is “Nian”? Nian was originally the name of a monster beast that started to prey on people the night before the beginning of a new year. But Nian was frightened of red color and cracker sound. So our ancestors would put up red paper decorations on their windows and doors, and set off fire-crackers to scare away Nian. Today we still keep these traditions, feeling the red color and the cracker sound add to the excitement and atmosphere of the celebration.
