The different ways to give directions
Foreign visitors are often puzzled(迷惑的)in Japan because most streets there don’t
have names.People there use landmark(路标)instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers,“Go straight down to the corner.Turn left at the big hotel and the post office is opposite the bus stop.”
In the Midwest of America, usually there are not many landmarks. So people will tell yodirections and distance. For example, people will say,“Go north two miles, you
will see it on your left.”
People in Los Angeles,California have no idea of distance(距离)on the map.The will say,“It is about fifteen minutes by car.”They don’t know how many miles away it is.
Few people understand the Greek language,so people in Greece(希腊)sometimes are so friendly. They will say,“Follow me”.Then he takes yoto the right place yoare looking for.
People in Mexico think“I don’t know”is not polite. When yoask them the way,no one answers“I don’t know”.They will gibe yoan answer, often a wrong one.A visitor can get very very lost there.
One thing will help yoeverywhere.Yomay not understand a person’s word, but yomay understand his body language. He or she will point in the right direction.

The Beefeaters
Beefeaters eat beef, right?Wrong! This is a special name for the soldiers who stand guard outside the Tower of London. This place used to be the home of the kings and queens of England. The Beefeaters are still there but only as tour guides!
Some people think they got the name“Beefeater”because they were fed very well to prepare them for war.The name is probably from the French word,“Boufitirs”,the name for the guards in the home of French kings. They protect the king’s food.So the name“Beefeater”may have nothing do to with eating beef at all!Beefeaters were the bodyguards of King Henry VII of England from 1485.Even when the king no longer lived at the tower, the bodyguards stayed there. They have been there ever since.
The Beefeaters have very colorful clothes that have not changed since 1552.Beefeaters wear a red jacket, red trousers and stockings and a special hat.
There are 36 of them and they are all old soldiers. It is difficult to become one.Today Beefeaters are no longer bodyguards. They take people on tours around the Tower of London instead. They are friendly and know a lot information about the history of London.People like to take photos with them.It is a fun way to remember London.
66.“Beefeaters”refers to(所指的是)the in this passage.
They stand the Tower of London.
